BALAY Rehabilitation is in need of One Research Assistant (RA):
Position: Research Assistant for Family and Kinship Subproject
Balay Rehabilitation Center, Inc. is an NGO that provides psychosocial services and advocacy support to victims of torture and organized violence. One of its projects focus on the prevention of urban violence in its site at Bagong Silang, Caloocan. Through this work on urban violence Balay has formed part of a Global Alliance that focuses its work on the protection and prevention against urban violence. It does so with knowledge generated from local projects in Denmark, South Africa, Liberia, and the Philippines. At least two central insights have emerged from its work of addressing authority-based violence across these different settings. First, it is productive not to distinguish rigidly between rehabilitation and prevention of violence and secondly, relations to family, community and authorities can be both perpetrative and supportive of groups and individuals at risk. Families can provide protection and support but can also be the context for violations.
In this sub-project the Global Alliance intend to explore, across three contexts, the role of families and kinship relations in addressing (or the opposite) authority-based violence in communities to understand how and the extent to which families are protective or perpetrative of authority-based violence. The project also recognizes that family and kin relations exist within the context of inherent gender and power dynamics, which may also have an impact on responses and actions towards addressing authority based violence in communities. The family structure is conceptualized as the configuration of roles, power and status. These are often context specific and depend on families’ socio-economic background, cultural and/or religious beliefs, family patterns and extent of urbanization. It is therefore important for this project to explore the above factors to strengthen the design of gender responsive family interventions and advocacy initiatives towards addressing authority based violence. In the Philippines, this would be operationalized in its local project site in Bagong Silang, Caloocan – where a Research Assistant (RA) is expected to contribute in the successful conduct of this.
